EDLD 5363 Multimedia and Video Technology was a gratifying course that taught me about video production and editing. In Week 1 I used editing software and still digital photos to create a short personal digital story using Microsoft Photo Story 3. We were required to use new free software to product a two minutes video. I learned how to work with a partner to help edit the personal video via Google email to produce my final personal story. By working with a partner, I had support and feedback about ways to narrow my story. I had the opportunity to partner with Monika Gonzalez, a second grade teacher in San Antonio. She was very supportive during the entire class. After I had edited my video, I posted it to YouTube.
In week 2, I had to select a free video editing tool, write a script for a podcast tutorial about the video editing tool and create a podcast tutorial to explain the free video editing tool. My partner and I selected Window Movie Maker to explore and produce our script and podcast. I had problems producing the podcast, so I had to ask Monika how to upload the podcast to YouTube. During this week, I learned how to use Window Movie Maker which I discovered was pre-installed on most computers today. I discovered how easy this product was to use with my students in class to create a movies with voice over. The advice I received from one reading this week was “Before you buy any video editing software, give the free stuff a try; you may find that it works for your project. “ (Seigchrist, n.d) .
During Week 3, we began the group formation and discussion for our final project. We had to form a group of four or five members to begin pre-production of our public service announcement due in Week 5. My group used Google email, Skype, and Google Document to collaborate about the outline of the pre-production information. The team members chose their favorite color and began filling in information on the chart. We communicated our individual progress with each other by using running emails conversation, Skype chat group, and Google Document. The group leaped into the project immediately to think of a topic to research statistics and facts about texting while driving, write a script, and make shots. The script was written instantly and the group began to discuss the proposal. The team decided to do a public service announcement about texting and driving. The PSA group was worried about one member because we did not hear from that person for several days. Bryan completed the voiceover quickly with revision using Audacity. Pamela put the shots into several emails for the group to preview before I assembled and produced the video. The group had some difficulties with viewing the video at first, but we found what format to download the video. I used Camtasia Studio 7 at first and I had to revise the video using Window Movie Maker to save as a wvm file. "Multimedia that's effective in learning doesn't simply consist of using multiple media together, but combining media mindfully in ways that capitalize on the characteristics of each individual medium and extend and augment the learning experience” (Shank, n.d.). The PSA project taught me how to combine different media to publish a product.
During Week 4 and 5, the group used dropbox to upload the video, revised voiceovers, and shots for the group to review. The PSA group collaborated nightly to make sure we were staying on schedule to meet the deadline for the PSA. I learned and discovered how easy it is for people across the country to collaborate using Web 2.0 tools. I actually enjoyed and looked forward to logging on my computer to see which team member was also online. If we observed a team member online, we would chat about the progress of the PSA and make changes. We learned how to produce and distribute digital video with multimedia products. The team demonstrated strategies and techniques for capturing and integrating sound, video, and digital images to publish our PSA. It was titled “Texting Tragedy”. I had a fantastic team to work with during this course. Finally we copyrighted our project using Creative Commons Attribution. I planned to teach my students how to work in teams to collaborate with another classroom in the district to complete a project in science. I feel this experience will be a rewarding experience for my students like it was for me.
I understand how important it is to use a variety of techniques to provide instruction. With different learning styles and needs, I have incorporated technology into my daily teaching techniques. Torres (2002) stated, “Media is the language of kids.” (Edutopia) I have discovered that my at-risk students respond and perform higher on multimedia activities than paper and pencil since integrating technology. These students behavior improved when allowed to use laptops for instruction in reading and mathematics. According to Torres (2002), students who do not like reading a textbook or listening to a lecture will dive into multimedia. (Edutopia,) Therefore, a “Well-designed multimedia helps learners build more accurate and effective mental models than they do from text alone.” (Shank, n.d.)
